Westport Innovations Inc. says it has signed an agreement with a ‘leading global engine manufacturer’ – as yet unnamed – to develop a heavy-duty truck engine for the North American market that features Westport's high-pressure direct-injection (HPDI) technology.
Westport, which will lead the program, says it plans on investing about $12 million in the engine development. Its partner is buying heavy-duty system components from Westport at a pre-set price per engine, and this firm will also offer ‘significant resources and pay for its own people and costs of the program.’
The product – the details of which are not known at this time – will be launched in 2014, according to Westport.
