El Paso, Texas-based transit organization Sun Metro has contracted with New Flyer Industries Inc. for the acquisition of at least 22 Xcelsior compressed natural gas (CNG) heavy-duty buses for use in regular service.

The companies note that the five-year contract reflects an order for 13 60-foot CNG buses and nine 40-foot CNG buses. The contract also includes four one-year options for up to 108 60-foot buses and up to 72 40-foot buses. The Xcelsior vehicles come standard with fire-suppression systems and 20-year-certified CNG tanks.

New Flyer and Sun Metro have worked together in the past to deploy a total of 60 natural gas-powered buses – both CNG and liquefied natural gas (LNG). If Sun Metro fully exercises the new contract, it will have 232 CNG-powered units in the fleet.

New Flyer expects to begin production of the 22 new buses in the third quarter and to deliver the vehicles in the first quarter of 2014.
