The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) is adding to its fleet 89 compressed natural gas (CNG) Xcelsior 40-foot heavy-duty buses from New Flyer Industries Inc.
This new order reflects an extension option from an existing contract between MARTA and New Flyer, which saw 80 Xcelsior 40-footers and eight Low Floor Restyled (LFR) 30-foot buses – all CNG models – go into service in late 2013 and early this year. That original contract still has an option for 88 additional CNG buses.
‘MARTA is committed to our customers and understands the need for sustainable transportation,’ says Chief Operations Officer Rich Krisak. ‘We are excited for these additional New Flyer buses and look forward to putting them into active service.’
The 89 buses are anticipated to begin production by the end of this month, and all of the vehicles are expected to be delivered to MARTA in the third quarter.
New Flyer has delivered more than 1,000 transit buses to MARTA since 1990.
