San Antonio Public Transit Fleet Adding CNG Buses, Refueling

0

VIA Metropolitan Transit, the public transportation provider in San Antonio, is expanding its complement of compressed natural gas (CNG) buses and enhancing its existing CNG refueling capabilities.

VIA first rolled out CNG-powered transit vehicles in 2010, with the deployment of four 40-foot buses that operate on downtown San Antonio routes. In 2012, the agency put 19 60-foot CNG buses into service as a part of its bus rapid transit service. With its entrance into CNG-powered transit service in 2010, VIA also built its own CNG refueling infrastructure at its main bus yard in the city.

Assisted by $35 million in funding from the Texas Department of Transportation's Unified Transportation Program, the agency will soon begin procuring its new fleet of CNG buses and reaching out for proposals to help develop new CNG refueling capabilities.
