Atlas Disposal Industries, a California-based recycling and refuse company, has teamed with Clean World Partners to start construction on a high-solids anaerobic digestion (AD) system and renewable natural gas fueling station in Sacramento.
Clean World Partners says the system it is installing at the South Area Transfer Station will convert 25 tons of food waste per day into renewable natural gas. Atlas Disposal will collect the waste from area food-processing companies, restaurants and supermarkets.
Atlas' fueling station will use natural gas produced by the digestion system to fuel its own natural gas vehicle (NGV) fleet, as well as vehicles from nearby jurisdictions and agencies.
The project's first phase is expected to be completed this summer, Clean World Partners says. Next year, the facility will be expanded to process 100 tons of waste per day.
