New York City officials and representatives from Nissan got together this week to formally unveil the 2014 Nissan NV200 as the city's ‘Taxi of Tomorrow.’
The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) selected the NV200 last May as the exclusive New York City taxi beginning in late 2013. The vehicle was chosen through a two-year competitive bid selection process, the TLC says.
The NV200's standard powerplant is a 2.0 L four-cylinder gasoline engine. But as a part of the Taxi of Tomorrow program, Nissan is also working with the city and taxi owners on a pilot program to study electric vehicles (EVs) as taxis. Nissan is providing six Nissan LEAF EVs and three Level 2 charging stations to test the electrification of the taxi fleet.
The new taxi will be exhibited during the 2012 New York International Auto Show, held this month at the Jacob Javits Center.
