Cummins Inc. has announced that it has begun development of a 15 L heavy-duty, spark-ignited natural gas engine to meet demand for on-highway applications.
The new ISX15 G will be based on the company's ISX15 diesel engine and will run on compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas or biomethane. Cummins says the new engine will also build on its know-how with spark-ignited, stoichiometric-cooled exhaust recirculation technology, and a simple, maintenance-free three-way catalyst will be the only required exhaust after-treatment.
Cummins says it expects the ISX15 G to be in limited production by 2014.
