Crazy Diamond Performance (CDP), a Michigan-based company that focuses on alternative-fuel and performance vehicle technologies, is developing a dedicated compressed natural gas (CNG) conversion system for the Chevrolet Cruze.
Company president Kevin Fern tells NGT News that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification that is being pursued will cover Cruze models with the 1.8-liter engine (for most fleet applications), as well as the 1.4-liter turbocharged engine that is found in models with higher-level trim packages, such as the LT and LTZ.
The certification will attain EPA Tier2 Bin2 emissions standards, he adds.
According to CDP, its CNG-powered Cruze – which will be available later this year starting at $25,995 – will have a 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. The fuel system will offer approximately 8.5 GGE of on-board CNG storage, allowing a vehicle range of 200-250 miles.
Moreover, Fern says the Cruze, with the CNG system installed, ‘has 1.5 times the cargo volume of its nearest competitor.’
‘This vehicle represents a significant change in the status quo in the aftermarket natural gas vehicle industry,’ he remarks.
