The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) is acquiring at least 88 compressed natural gas (CNG) buses from New Flyer Industries Inc. under a new contract.
The agreement calls for a firm order of 80 Xcelsior 40-foot buses and eight Low Floor Restyled (LFR) 30-foot buses. The contract leaves open the option for MARTA to buy 177 additional 40-foot Xcelsiors (CNG-powered or hybrids).
MARTA has been buying buses – a total of more than 900 – from New Flyer since 1990. Today, the majority of the fleet's units are powered by CNG, and the new contract will enable the agency to retire old assets.
New Flyer says production of the 88 buses will likely begin this quarter, and the full complement will be delivered to MARTA by the end of the year.
