Westport Innovations Inc. says supermarket chain Kroger has placed an order for 40 of Westport's iCE PACK liquefied natural gas (LNG) tank systems, which are designed for the on-board storage of LNG in applications such as long-haul trucking.
Kroger's 40 Freightliner natural gas trucks, which will also feature the Cummins Westport ISX12 G engine, will be delivered by the end of the summer to support the company's corporate goal to improve fleet efficiency by increasing miles per gallon and load capacity.
Kroger, which has over 2,600 stores in the country, is implementing its first pilot program of the Westport iCE PACK systems at one of its Los Angeles distribution centers.
