UPMC Adds CNG Buses and EV Charging Stations to Alt-Fuel Portfolio

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) recently deployed 13 shuttle buses that are powered by compressed natural gas (CNG), and another seven are expected to come online soon.

UPMC says a $500,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is partly funding the acquisition of the CNG buses.

Additionally, UPMC has expanded its alternative fuel infrastructure with the installation of a half-dozen electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. Two stations are now located at UPMC East, UPMC Presbyterian and UPMC Montefiore, and the organization has plans to add another six EV chargers at various facilities this year.

A pair of grants that are being administered by the Pittsburgh Region Clean Cities is covering 40% of the total installation cost of the charging stations, which are part of a larger EV charging network in southwestern Pennsylvania.
