Transit Agency to Work with Volvo Group Subsidiary on Electric Buses

STM, the public transit agency in Montreal, is partnering with Volvo Group subsidiary Nova Bus to initiate a pilot project that will examine the potential for electrification of STM's heavy-duty fleet.

According to the groups' memorandum of understanding, STM will initially test three Nova LFSe all-electric buses and deploy two charging stations at bus terminals in Montreal. These vehicles will be delivered in the third quarter of 2015 and operate in regular service for three years, beginning in 2016.

The government of Quebec has mandated a ‘Transportation Electrification Strategy,’ whereby the city fleet's greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced by 30% by 2020, compared to 1990 levels.

Volvo says Montreal is the first city in North America to take part in its City Mobility program, which ‘brings together key players to implement sustainable and integrated innovative pilot projects.’
