New Player Joins FTA’s Fuel Cell Transit Bus Work

CALSTART says US Hybrid Corp., a company that focuses on medium- and heavy-duty electric/hybrid and fuel cell vehicles, is the new main supplier for the Federal Transit Administration's (FTA) work related to fuel cell transit buses.

CALSTART, as the administrator of the FTA's National Fuel Cell Bus Program, selected US Hybrid to succeed UTC Corp., which was the previous technology partner in the program. UTC, however, divested its fuel cell business last year, and US Hybrid will largely pick up where UTC left off.

US Hybrid has been providing technologies such as cathode air blowers and power converters to fuel cell suppliers – including UTC – since 1999. The company has worked on the system design, integration and operation of fuel cell shuttle buses, specialty vehicles and passenger cars.

As a part of the FTA program, US Hybrid will ‘fabricate, integrate, test and validate an advanced-generation fuel cell with the intent to commercialize the technology for transit use,’ according to CALSTART. The company will complete existing fuel cell power plant development, fabrication and validation at a facility in South Windsor, Conn.
