Frito-Lay Commences Plan To Add Nearly 200 Electric Trucks To Its Fleet

Frito-Lay North America, a unit of PepsiCo, says it is adding 10 new electric trucks to its fleet of delivery vehicles in Orlando, Fla., marking the first of 176 electric trucks the company plans to roll out in the U.S. and Canada.

The Newton medium-duty trucks, designed by Smith Electric Vehicles, can operate for up to 100 miles on a single charge. Frito-Lay says once all 176 electric trucks are deployed, the company will eliminate the need for 500,000 gallons of fuel annually.

‘With the seventh largest privately owned fleet in the U.S., we have set a goal of becoming the most fuel-efficient fleet in the country, and these vehicles give us an opportunity to use the latest advances in transportation technology as a significant way to reduce our environmental impact,’ comments Mike O'Connell, senior director of fleet for Frito-Lay North America.
