New York-based Ferrara Bros. Building Materials Corp. has received delivery of 15 more compressed natural gas (CNG) concrete mixer trucks from McNeilus Cos. Inc. Ferrara had already been operating two CNG trucks since 2011.

‘Our fleet is comprised of 75 mixers, and now 17 are powered by compressed natural gas; we've got a ways to go, but we intend to become a 100 percent CNG fleet,” comments Bob Gartman, Ferrara Bros.' vice president of operations. “Ferrara is making the move to CNG because we firmly believe in reducing our country's dependence on foreign oil. And we've had a very good experience with McNeilus and its CNG configuration.”

According to McNeilus, the new ready-mix vehicles feature Cummins Westport ISL-G CNG engines. Tom Harris, McNeilus Cos.' vice president of fleet sales, notes that interest in CNG is rising.

“We're seeing a growing number of progressive ready-mix producers, such as Ferrara Bros., transition to CNG-powered vehicles,” says Harris. “From significantly reduced fuel costs to far quieter operation, the advantages to our customers are significant – and the trend to CNG is accelerating.’
