The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has named its SmartWay Excellence Award winners for 2013 – a recognition of trucking, intermodal and other organizations' efforts toward achieving higher levels of efficiency and lower levels of emissions in transportation.
The 2013 award assessments were based on environmental performance as demonstrated by partners' data submissions with the SmartWay freight-assessment and carbon-tracking tools. The EPA recognized eligible partners in three categories: shipper awards, logistics awards and carrier awards. The awards were further broken down by ‘large’ and ‘medium/small’ operations, by mileage traveled.
The SmartWay carriers that were recognized for top environmental performance varied from package and refrigerated companies to tanker and multimodal carriers. A number of firms that are engaged in the deployment of alternative fuels, including DHL Express USA, Ruan Transportation Management Systems, Penske Logistics LLC and others, were among the awardees.
