U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Steven Chu has announced $5 million in new funding for community-based efforts to deploy electric-vehicle (EV) infrastructure, as well as a partnership with Google Inc. and dozens of EV companies that is designed to inform consumers about charging stations.
As a part of the funding program, local governments, private companies and communities will work together to develop plans and strategies for EV deployment, update their EV permitting processes and develop incentive programs.
Also, the DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory will use Google Maps technology to coordinate an online network of all U.S. charging stations. This network will be the primary data source for GPS and mapping services tracking EV charging locations.
