Uruguay-based transportation company Buquebus recently worked with CTS Auto SA and BYD Co. Ltd. to deploy the first of several all-electric buses in its fleet.
The 36-foot low-floor bus, which was manufactured by BYD, features two in-wheel electric motors powered by iron-phosphate batteries. The vehicle achieves a full charge in less than five hours, and its operating range is approximately 150 miles. BYD's bus reaches a top speed of about 55 mph.
The initial units that Buquebus brings on board will run a dedicated routes in the city of Colonia, but the company intends to add more all-electric buses to handle urban transit needs.
Buquebus, BYD and the government of Uruguay first announced their partnership last July.
