SAE International has completed a pair of technical standards that are designed to ‘harmonize’ hydrogen refueling infrastructure on a global scale in order to accommodate growth in the commercial fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) sector.
SAE J2601, ‘Fueling Protocols for Light Duty Gaseous Hydrogen Surface Vehicles,’ covers hydrogen fast-fueling (three to five minutes) for all light-duty FCEVs, including models with a range of 300 or more miles. The protocol was laboratory-validated with OEM hydrogen storage tanks under extreme conditions, as well as in the field at public stations.
SAE J2799, ‘Hydrogen Surface Vehicle to Station Hardware and Software,’ standardizes wireless communications between FCEVs and hydrogen stations. When coupled with J2601 fueling, the state of refill can be further improved to 95% to 100%, allowing for slightly more driving range, according to the group.
