Following the announcement earlier this week that bi-fuel compressed natural gas (CNG) options would be available on two popular model-year 2015 pickup-truck platforms, General Motors has confirmed that dedicated CNG systems will also be coming to model-year 2014 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana full-size passenger vans.
Dedicated CNG fuel systems are already on the option sheet for 2014 Express and Savana cargo vans. The passenger-van versions, however, are designed to accommodate up to 15 seats and room for passengers' cargo.
The vans use GM's 6.0-liter Vortec V-8 engine, which is the same power plant found in the bi-fuel Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks. But as dedicated CNG vehicles, the passenger vans are optioned with three CNG cylinders that offer about 200 miles of driving range.
Production of CNG vans is scheduled to begin early next year, and the order and delivery process for the vehicles is the same as for ordering any other vehicle options. The CNG tanks and fuel systems are installed by a GM supplier at a secondary location and delivered to customers from Chevrolet and GMC dealerships. The vehicles are fully warranted and validated by GM.
