The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) has opened a publicly available hydrogen-fueling station in Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany, to support a growing number of hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.
The Fraunhofer ISE says the hydrogen is produced through electrolysis that is powered, in part, by solar energy. The station consists of a 30 bar pressure electrolyzer, a mechanical compressor for hydrogen compression to 700 bar, puffer storage at two different pressure levels, and pumps for dispensing the hydrogen.
‘Especially in the mobility sector, hydrogen displays strengths – in particular, the short fueling time required, of 3 minutes, and the distance range per tank, which is already over 400 km,’ says Dr. Christopher Hebling, director of the energy technology division at Fraunhofer ISE.
