This week, the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded a number of grants to Pennsylvania transportation agencies to support various advanced projects in the state.
Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., made the announcements, which included the following:
- The Lehigh and Northampton Transportation Authority received a $3 million grant to purchase hybrid buses built in the U.S.
- SETPA was awarded $5 million for the replacement of diesel buses with hybrid buses, as well as $1.44 million grant for energy-storage devices on the Market-Frankford Line.
- River Valley Transit received a $3.5 million grant to be used for the construction of a compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling facility and the purchase of compressed natural gas transit vehicles.
- The Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority was given $2 million to replace diesel vehicles with vehicles that run on CNG.
- The Port Authority of Allegheny County received a $3.07 million grant to go toward a CNG fueling station.
