Smith Electric Vehicles Corp. has released its Newton Step Van – an all-electric commercial vehicle based on the company's Newton platform and featuring a walk-in body produced by Utilimaster.
The vehicle is designed mainly for delivery routes in urban environments, offering a gross vehicle weight of 14,000 pounds to 26,000 pounds and a range of approximately 100 miles on a full charge. The van uses the proprietary Smith Drive, Smith Power and Smith Link powertrain, battery and monitoring technologies.
Smith says FedEx Express will be the first company to deploy the new vans and anticipates further roll-out in select U.S. markets throughout 2012.
