New York City's Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) has voted to officially approve the replacement of retiring taxis with the Nissan NV200 ‘Taxi of Tomorrow.’ The vehicle, which the TLC tentatively selected as the city's exclusive taxi in May 2011, made its debut earlier this year.
The first Nissan taxis will go into circulation among New York's 13,000-vehicle fleet next fall. The NV200 is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine that has been heralded for its fuel efficiency. The vehicle, which has an MSRP of just under $30,000, will be manufactured at Nissan's facility in Cuernavaca, Mexico.
‘We're looking forward to working side-by-side with the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission to deliver the safest and most comfortable taxi ever to be on the streets of New York,’ says Joe Castelli, vice president of commercial vehicles and fleet for Nissan North America Inc.
