New Flyer of America Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of New Flyer Industries Inc., has secured orders for new compressed natural gas (CNG) buses from the Golden Empire Transit District and the Sangamon Mass Transit District.
Specifically, the Golden Empire Transit District (GET bus), the operator of mass transportation in Bakersfield, Calif., has awarded New Flyer a contract for two dozen Xcelsior 40-foot, heavy-duty CNG transit buses. The new order supports aged fleet replacement and the GET bus focus on environmental sustainability.
“We are proud to help advance GET bus in its pursuit of fleet revitalization and environmental sustainability,” says Wayne Joseph, president of New Flyer of America. “As transit districts in California strive to reduce their carbon footprint, New Flyer will work alongside to provide public transportation that connects cities, delivers low- and no- emission solutions, and improves quality of life for surrounding communities.”
The Sangamon Mass Transit District, which operates public transportation in Springfield, Ill., has exercised options with New Flyer for eight Xcelsior clean diesel, 40-foot heavy-duty transit buses and nine Xcelsior 35-foot heavy-duty CNG transit buses, which will be converted from New Flyer’s backlog to a firm order.
The 17-bus order will revitalize the Sangamon Mass Transit District fleet by replacing New Flyer CNG buses from 2000 and 2003 and El Dorado CNG buses from 2005. The purchase was supported by a combination of local, state, and federal funding.
“We are proud to have supported Sangamon Mass Transit District in its revitalization initiative,” says Joseph. “With previous New Flyer buses having been in operation for up to 17 years, our new generation of Xcelsior buses will continue providing reliable and safe transportation in the community of Springfield.”
