Lockheed Martin has delivered the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) tank built at its dedicated facility in New Orleans to Wartsila for integration into an offshore support vessel for Harvey Gulf International Marine LLC.
Harvey Gulf's LNG-powered vessel is currently under construction at Gulf Coast Shipyard Group in Gulfport, Miss. The ship will ultimately be used to support Harvey Gulf's marine transportation operations in the Gulf of Mexico.
Lockheed Martin says its technology is the first in a series of cryogenic tanks that the company will produce to support the use of LNG in marine and other applications. The technology was developed based on the firm's experience from manufacturing external fuel tanks for NASA space shuttles.
