Germany-based Sud-Chemie AG has signed a memorandum of understanding with LG Chem Ltd., headquartered in South Korea, to establish a joint venture for the volume production of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) for use in rechargeable batteries.
The firms say the joint venture will focus on providing ‘stable supplies of LFP’ to LG Chem. The cathode material will be employed in applications such as batteries for electric and hybrid vehicles
LG Chem and Sud-Chemie note that future collaborations could lead to the development of advanced olivine structure materials, such as lithium manganese iron phosphate, which provides higher energy density than LFP.
