Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) says it has developed a liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tank, the Lobe-Bundle, for maritime applications.
The tank uses ring-shaped plates instead of conventional flat plates to reduce tank weight and construction costs, HHI says. The Lobe-Bundle is built using spray-type insulation rather than panel-type insulation, which also reduces construction time.
The tank is designed for 165,000 cubic-meter LNG carriers, but it can also be used in LNG-fueled vessels, LNG bunkering systems and LPG carriers. The technology meets International Maritime Organization standards requiring high level of structural analysis and fatigue/fracture analysis for Type B independent LNG storage tanks.
HHI notes that it plans to begin building pilot-scale tanks next year.
