Royal DSM and POET LLC have formed a joint venture to demonstrate and license cellulosic bio-ethanol that is produced from corn-crop residue.
The companies say the first commercial demonstration of their technology will be at Project Liberty, which is currently being constructed adjacent to POET's existing corn ethanol plant in Emmetsburg, Iowa. The initial capacity – set for production in late 2013 – is expected to be 20 million gallons in the first year, growing to approximately 25 million gallons per year.
The joint company, which will be known as POET-DSM Advanced Biofuels LLC, intends to license its technology to additional plants at the other 26 corn ethanol facilities in POET's network, as well as to other global producers.
