Collins Bus Corp. says it is now taking orders from fleet managers for its new Type A school bus featuring a compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel system.
The vehicle is built on a Ford E-450 cutaway chassis with the 6.8-liter engine and the Westport WiNG Power System – a CNG platform certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB). Collins says the dedicated CNG system offers approximately 250 to 300 miles of driving range.
‘Our team of engineers worked with Ford and Collins Bus to conduct extensive simulations and physical crash-testing to meet the stringent school bus safety requirements,’ says Paul Shaffer, Westport's vice president and managing director of North American Ford business. ‘With the distinct price and emissions benefits of natural gas, we're excited to offer a CNG-powered product to school districts.’
