California Transit Company Buying Electric Buses

West Covina, Calif.-based Foothill Transit is acquiring two battery-electric buses from Proterra Inc., expanding on a relationship that the organizations initiated in 2010. The agency was the first customer in the U.S. to operate Proterra electric buses in revenue service.

Foothill Transit serves over 14 million customers on 36 fixed-route bus lines each year in the San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys. Its 315-bus fleet covers over 300 square miles and includes express routes into downtown Los Angeles and Pasadena.

The new 40-foot electric buses from Proterra are expected to enter service on these routes in December.

‘These buses are a much-needed innovative step for our region,’ says Doug Tessitor, chairman of Foothill Transit's executive board. ‘These vehicles are part of our commitment to sustainability and clean air. We want our communities, our neighbors, to be proud of their public transit system. These new buses will debut here first, and we're very excited to see them on the road.’
