The U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E) has issued its third open funding opportunity for up to $125 million. The so-called OPEN 2015 solicitation will support energy research and development projects for disruptive new technologies in transportation and stationary applications.
Previous ARPA-E open solicitations in 2009 and 2012 supported a slew of projects, including ones related to advanced fuels, as well as advanced vehicle design and materials.
Desired areas of research for OPEN 2015 include – but are not limited to – all aspects of transportation; electricity generation by both renewable and non-renewable means; electricity transmission, storage and distribution; and energy efficiency.
ARPA-E notes that the goals of open solicitations are intentionally ill defined so as to encourage out-of-the-box approaches to stationary and transportation energy applications.
