Florida's Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) has outlined its plans to pursue the deployment of 100 heavy-duty transit buses powered by natural gas, as well as the development of a compressed natural gas (CNG) refueling station.
The Florida Times-Union was on hand earlier this week to cover JTA's forum on the subject of CNG and natural gas vehicles, reporting that the agency intended to soon open up a request for proposals for building the refueling infrastructure. It is possible that JTA could fund the project itself entirely, or the RFP process could help identify a private company with which JTA could partner.
JTA hopes to have the station operational by September of next year, to coincide with its first delivery of CNG-powered transit buses. Over a five-year period, the agency will deploy 100 natural gas buses – a total representing more than two-thirds of the entire fleet.
