The government fleet in Laramie County, Wyo., has initiated its shift to a wider adoption of natural gas vehicles, thanks largely to compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel prices that are significantly lower than diesel and gasoline.
The Wyoming Tribune-Eagle reports that CNG is currently $1.35/gasoline gallon equivalent at Cheyenne Light, Fuel & Power Co.'s refueling station. Diesel is about $3.50/gallon locally.
In turn, the county recently acquired three trucks that will be modified to run on CNG at a cost between $5,000 and $10,000 per conversion, public works director Don Beard told the Tribune-Eagle. The fleet is also planning on adding CNG-powered heavy-duty vehicles.
‘On larger stuff, as we bring it in, it's a huge savings right up front from the first time the engine turns over,’ he noted.
