Mazda Motor Corp. is taking the occasion of the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show to debut a concept Mazda Axela/Mazda3 that runs on compressed natural gas (CNG).
The Mazda3 SKYACTIV-CNG Concept is intended to round out the Axela as a ‘multi-solution’ vehicle that can be optioned to run on different fuels – gasoline, diesel and natural gas – as well as in a hybrid-electric configuration. The concept is a bi-fuel vehicle that runs on either CNG or gasoline, with only ‘minor modifications’ to the high-compression-ratio engine, the company says.
The Axela goes on sale in Japan on Nov. 21. Mazda notes that the Mazda3 platform is the company's largest seller globally, claiming 30% of sales.
