Volkswagen Group has awarded Ballard Power Systems a four-year engineering services contract aimed at developing fuel cells for use in demonstration cars in Volkswagen's fuel cell automotive research program. The contract, which is estimated to be worth at least $60 million, has a two- year extension option.
‘I anticipate accelerating our automotive fuel cell program as a result of this collaborative effort, which will bring together additional fuel cell skills and expertise in both organizations,’ says Dr. Juergen Leohold, head of group research at Volkswagen AG.
The project will involve the design and manufacture of a next-generation fuel cell for use in Volkswagen's HyMotion demonstration cars. Ballard will lead the development of fuel cell product design – e.g., the membrane electrode assembly (MEA), plate and stack components – along with testing and integration work.
