The government of Uruguay is working with Buquebus, the country's largest tourism company, to deploy GreenCity electric buses from BYD Auto Co. Ltd.
‘I am looking forward to seeing electric vehicle technology in this country, as we are very devoted to the protection of the environment,’ said Jose Mujica, president of Uruguay, during a contract-signing ceremony yesterday.
The BYD buses are able to run 155 miles on a single charge in urban conditions, with an energy consumption of less than 130 kWh per 62 miles. The core technology is BYD's proprietary iron-phosphate battery platform, along with an in-wheel drive system.
The first buses are scheduled to arrive in Uruguay before end of the year, with deliveries continuing through 2015.
