Lawmakers on the Massachusetts Joint Committee have advanced a bill that would expand the perks of buying and owning an electric vehicle (EV) in the commonwealth, reports Boston.com.
If passed, “An Act Promoting Electric Vehicle Adoption” would allow EV owners to drive in high-occupancy vehicle lanes normally reserved for cars with two or more passengers. The bill would also increase access to EV charging stations and allow municipalities to create EV-designated parking spots. The bill would also make available information regarding all charging stations.
The bill would also require the state Department of Energy Resources to develop a new standard for building codes with regard to EV charging stations.
Massachusetts is part of a seven-state initiative to put 3.3 million plug-in vehicles on U.S. roads by 2025, 300,000 of which Massachusetts is responsible for. Currently, Massachusetts offers plug-in car buyers a $2,500 rebate, on top of the $7,500 federal tax rebate, on any qualifying plug-in hybrid or EV.
