High-Horsepower Natural Gas Technology in Use at Fracking Sites

0

Caterpillar, Apache Corp., Linde North America and Halliburton have partnered to add dual-fuel natural gas engine technology to 12 of Halliburton's new Q-10 pumps, which are used in the field at large-scale natural gas fracking operations.

Caterpillar adapted its proprietary Dynamic Gas Blending (DGB) engine technology to accommodate the needs of the 2,000 hp Halliburton pumps. Linde North America developed the associated gas distribution system and is supplying the liquefied natural gas (LNG) for the project. These units, which are in operation in places such as the Granite Wash site in Oklahoma, can run on compressed natural gas (CNG) or LNG.

‘We anticipate that in the not-so-distant future, these DGB engines can be easily retrofitted to efficiently burn available on-site conditioned field gas, thereby saving operators additional fuel transport costs,’ says Marc Edwards, senior vice president of Halliburton's completion and production division.
