Ohio Transit Agency Initiates Propane Conversions Within Bus Fleet

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) has acquired 20 propane vehicles featuring autogas systems from ROUSH CleanTech to provide transportation services for individuals with disabilities.

The propane-powered paratransit shuttle buses are built on a Ford E-450 chassis with a body designed by ElDorado National – Kansas. Green Alternative Systems installed the ROUSH CleanTech liquid propane autogas fuel systems on the buses.

Over a six-year period, the fleet is projected to save a total of approximately $420,000 in fuel and maintenance costs by switching to propane.

‘We learned of other transit agencies that were successful using propane autogas technology to save money and lower their environmental impact,’ says Joe Calabrese, CEO and general manager of the Greater Cleveland RTA. ‘When you can save money while saving the planet, it's a no-brainer.’

The RTA, which has deployed alt-fuel vehicles such as electric and natural gas vehicles over the past 20 years, is currently building an on-site propane autogas refueling station to support the new fleet. The agency is aiming to switch its entire fleet of 100 paratransit buses to autogas through its normal replacement cycle.
