Luxfer Buys Competitor to Fortify CNG Presence

Luxfer Group says it has acquired Vexxel Composites LLC and will weave the two-year-old company into its global Luxfer Gas Cylinders business division.

Vexxel, which will operate as Luxfer Utah for the time being, has focused on the manufacture of Type 4 carbon-composite, polymer-lined cylinders for the storage of compressed natural gas (CNG) in natural gas vehicle applications. Vexxel's facility in Brigham City, Utah, is already tooled to manufacture such products.

Luxfer itself is wrapping up the development of a new range of Type 4 tanks that will be aimed primarily at the Class 8 heavy-duty trucking sector. The acquisition will help the company move quickly into full-scale production for this line of cylinders.

‘Acquiring the business adds another 4,000 units per year to Luxfer's CNG production capacity, and we will benefit from their highly trained workforce and integrated facilities,’ says Andy Butcher, president of Luxfer Gas Cylinders, North America.

Luxfer's new Type 4 tanks will join its existing portfolio of Type 3, aluminum-lined CNG cylinders and related systems.
